New Partnership Launches First Collaborative Conservation Project

Mahurangi West Pest is excited to announce the signing of a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Auckland Council, formalising our partnership to restore and protect Mahurangi West and its Regional Parks.
While Mahurangi West Pest has built a strong community-led pest control network across more than 3,500 hectares of private land, Auckland Council manages the neighbouring Regional Parks. This partnership recognises that effective conservation doesn’t stop at property boundaries. By working together across public and private land, we can create healthier habitats, strengthen native wildlife populations, and achieve even greater conservation outcomes for the Mahurangi West peninsula.
The first initiative under this new partnership is the Mahurangi West Coastal Wildlife Monitoring Project – Coast Guardians
Training by local Ranger Jared is on the 5th September at 9am, meet at top of Sullivans Bay.
This exciting community project will bring together volunteers to monitor sections of the Mahurangi West coastline throughout the breeding season. Participants will help record the presence and breeding activity of kororā (little blue penguins), nesting shorebirds and other coastal wildlife, while also noting threats such as predator activity and human disturbance.
The information collected will help build a valuable long-term picture of our local wildlife, allowing us to better understand the benefits of predator control and guide future conservation work.
In the coming weeks we’ll be inviting volunteers to attend a training session led by Auckland Council’s Community Ranger, Jared Anderson, before adopting a section of coastline to monitor throughout the season.
Whether you’re an experienced conservation volunteer or simply enjoy spending time exploring our beautiful coastline, we’d love to have you involved. To register your interest please email mahurangiwestpest@gmail.com
